The City of Santa Cruz is seeking proposals for the creation of a public Wi-Fi network at the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. As part of a project to fix storm damage and renovate the wharf, the city is planning to offer wireless Internet access to the public. Officials also expect it will help city staff, bolster emergency communications and be of use to vendors at the wharf and for video streaming of events held there, “such as volleyball tournaments, surfing, online sea lion and wildlife viewing.”
The city is planning a website that will serve as a portal through which visitors can access Wi-Fi and the city “can collect visitor data as well as disseminate important news, information and interpretive opportunities.”
Crews recently dismantled the former Dolphin Restaurant on the wharf as part of more than $3 million in repairs and improvements in the wake of damage caused by storms in 2023.
The project includes replacement of about 60 pilings, installation and replacement of associated structural elements, mechanical connectors and decking.
